Among the many strategies that I've learned from the CLS 105, I've found the target planner and the 20 minute test prep to be very useful to me. I've always had trouble in managing my time well and from these strategies, I was able to manage it better. The first strategy I used was the Target Planner. At first, I was not really up for trying this strategy because of going through all the works on creating the target and labeling each of the sections with the dates. I felt that I would just be wasting my time in creating the targets; I could just do other works instead. However, as I received an essay assignment for the History 102, I couldn't figure how I should start my essay. Thus, I decided to use the target planner just to see if it could help. And it did!! :)

I divided the target into 6 sections with specifid dates and works in each sections. I followed the target and tried to do the specific work in the exact date. Before using this strategy, I wasn't sure where to start my essay at. However, as I organized the dates and followed the target, I was completing the essay step by step, to make a better product. Target planner seems to help a lot and I am planning on using it more in other courses.
Also for another strategy, I used the 20 minutes test prep strategy. Unlike the target planner, I actually wanted to try this strategy as soon as I saw it. Last semester, I tended to study for the test at the very end, going through almost the whole textbook again because I did not quite remember the lecture just by looking at my notes. This is because everytime I get out of the lecture, I never looked back at the notes until studying for the exam. Because of this, I couldn't remember what the notes were about when I got back into it. Thus, I realized that I really needed to review the notes and the texts as soon as I get out of the class.
The 2o min test prep was the perfect way to do this. Unless I did not have another class right after the previous class, I went back into my room or to the library and took out the notes and the textbooks. And I looked over the notes and the texts carefully, trying to remember and understand the lecture materials for 20 minutes. This was a great idea because After a week, I still remember what I learned from the lectures last week. This could help me a lot when the exam approaches for I would not have to waste my time in re-reading the texts to study for the test. I could save my time and I would not have to sleep late on the night before the test to study.
I have also used the target planner for CLS and Chemistry. By dividng up the tasks into manageable sections and giving them new set of due dates, I was able to work step-by-step just like you did. Also, I have used 20-min test prep strategy for previous week's math exam. This strategy was really effective as it saved a lot of time preparing for the exam. Usually, I sit down and study for exam until I am confident that I know all the materials. However, the 20-min test prep helped me to use my time efficiently and prevented me from cramming the materials a night before the exam. Overall, I have to say that both strategies work great and I think I will keep using these strategies for all my other courses as well for it is really beneficial.
ReplyDeleteI used the 20 minute test prep, also. As I said in mine, it was very helpful. It helped me save time studying later and memorize better because I looked right after class. It benefited me in many ways. As I look at your target planner, I guess I will use that when I have a project or an essay to do. It looks very useful, and looks like it will help me get organized when I begin to do a project or an essay.
ReplyDeleteI love using target planner for research papers and things that require a lot of planning. It helps me to get motivated to get the smaller works than eventually work toward the final finished product. However, 20 minutes test prep strategy didn't work as well compared to the target planner just because I'm so used to study right before the test. It takes a while to get my old habit out of my head. However, I see benefits and potential of this strategy being really useful for future exams if I just get used to it. Overall, two strategies are really fun or well effective to use for assignments and exams.
ReplyDeleteThe target planner is a great way to organize your time schedule in a friendly manner for both you and the due dates. I agree with Chan on the fact that it motivates one to work step by step and reach to the final product. The 20 minutes test prep strategy worked perfectly for me as well. I have a habit of cramming up exam materials the day before the actual exam date. By using 20 minutes prep, I really didn't need to spend much of extra time on studying the test because I already knew and remembered the material! It is an effective and efficient way to study exams
ReplyDeleteI hate cramming the night right before a test. It always messes with my brain, and the next day, I sleep throughout the whole day after my test! 20 minutes test prep is a great way to stop this habbit. Just looking over your notes right after your class can be annoying at times, but you can't ignore that it helps so much to remember the things you need for the test. It saves time too, and you will have a good night sleep before the exam date. Target Planner helped me out in a lot of ways as well. It also helped me save time and hand the assignments in at the right time. Creating the times and due dates are helpful in a lot of ways. I love how I can get everything done on the dates I assigned myself. They just work step by step, and there was never a time when I had to do the whole thing in an hour. Because you divide your time and things to do in parts, they help you manage your time well and you can keep track of what you are doing.
