After I came to college, one of my hardest difficulty that I had to overcome was time management. Unlike high school, where you spend most of the time in school and had someone who can help you manage your time, I had to choose my own classes, plan my own schedule, and manage my time well. It was not a easy task at first; I could not handle the freedom that suddenly came out of nowhere. Comparing to high school, I did not have that much of pressure about studying, so I spend most of the time with my friends or goofing off in the Internet. During my first semester, the only time I studyed was when I was in class and when I was doing homework. But, I soon realized that I was not managing my time wisely. I was not satisfied with my grades, and thought that I need to manage my time better at my second semester.

One note is the note that I took during class. After the class, I reorganize the note by making a new one. I use the green pen for the title, blue pen for the examples, black pen for important term, and red pen for exculsive information. While I reorganize the note, it helps me go over the materials.

Luckily, at CLS 105, I learned several time management strategies that could help my studying in college. Among those time management strategies that we learned, I thought that the fritter finder and the 20 minute test prep will help me the most, because I thought that these two strategies will help me use time efficiently. The first strategy that I made was the fritter finder. This strategy helped me realize how much free time I have when I exclude my class times. I always thought that classes take lot of my time during my daily routine. However, after I completed the fritter finder, I found out that there are a lot of free times.
This is a picture of my fritter finder; the blue part is my free time, and the white part with red 'Class' in it is the time when I have class. The schedule starts from 8:00 a.m. (when I wake up) to 2:00 a..m. (when I sleep). I was suprised to see that there were lots of free time that I could use. I often thought that I did not have much time to complete all of works that were required. But, after I made this, I began to manage my time better and used my time more wisely than I used to.
The second strategy I chose was the 20 minute test prep. I usually go over the notes that I took in class only before test or exam. Unless then, I do not go over the notes; in other word, I do not review the lecture after the class ends. So, it usually takes me more time when I try to go over the informations that the class went over. When the test or exam period comes up, I do not remember most of the materials that the professors taught us. I sometimes struggle trying to remember the informations when I review the notes and the textbooks. For this reason, the 20 minute test prep is a big help. I save my time studying more later (like right before exam). The strategy also helped me memorize the class materials better because I reviewed them right after class. I used this strategy for my AST 104 class, which have a lot of things to go over.

I have to disagree with you Andrew about the Fritter Finder strategy. It had a negative effect on me for when I found out how much free time I had during the week, it made me even more procrastinate than usual. The highlighting of free time between classes made me feel that I have so much free time throughout the week and didn't really gave me the pressure to start on my homework or prepare for exams. However, the 20-minute strategy had positive effects. For previous two weeks, I had a math exam and chemistry exam. By using the 20-minute exam prep method, I was able to study each sections and did not have to cram the exam materials a night before the exam. It pressured me to use my time efficiently and therefore, I had the time to go over and review the study materials; something that I didn't have prior to using the strategy.
ReplyDeleteI think I can try to use the fritter finder to see how much free time I have so that I can actually schedule my week more efficiently. I am afraid to try it however because I kind of agree with what Yong Jin said. I feel like if I see how much free time I have, I might use those times not efficiently, knowing that I have enough time to do work. I agree with you on the 20 minute test prep however! :) I also think it helps tremendously on preparing for the upcoming exam. I find your strategy of reorganizing the notes is a very good strategy! I think I can use this to help me reviewing the lecture notes in more efficient way!
ReplyDeleteFritter Finder didn't have much positive or negative effect on me. However, I should note that it helped me see how much time I had. I knew when I was free and when I was occupied. It should be true for everyone here that we all have days where we have more classes and where we have less classes. The 20 minutes prep is a great way to reduce your time on studying exams. Not only do you remember what you learned that day, but you will also be able to understand the material better. You remember the lecture clearly. Thumbs up for 20 minute prep. Your test results will show its effectiveness.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm already using the fritter finder everyday because of my iPhone planner. It lets you see the time between your courses and really visualize the free time you have in between classes. Also, because each courses are displayed in different colors so it's easy to see what's what. But if I had to make a separate planner dedicated to the fritter finder, I don't know if it can be as effective as it would be on my iPhone. For 20 minutes test prep strategy, I use it for nutritions class and for CLS class and so far it works great and I can't wait to see the result on my first exam on these classes. Great work on your posting !
ReplyDeleteAgent Andrew RHEE, I have read about the Fritter Finder from the textbook and now I even read yours, it convinces me more to use it because it helps me figure out the tons of free time i have. By the way your free time looks kind of messy Agent Rhee, but I can see how the Fritter Finder helped you utilize and save your time more than before. When I looked at all the free spaces I had, I told myself, "Wow where did all my free time go?" "Why was I always cramming the nights, which made me get tired the next day?" It is a good help to you because then you are in control of your time. Your memory does not work like a one timer. More you look and review your stuff, the more clearly it will stay in your memory. I tried reviewing after my classes as well. In the past, I only wrote the notes in class and never had the chance to look over them again. However, just skimming through your notes everyday helps you remember things so much better.
