Stress Management

I do not usually get stressed out easily, but the only thing that I get stressed is from academic works. Because I have a lot of pressure about my academic works, I sometimes get frustrated about it. The funny thing is that I do not really know what kind of things make me stressed out. So, in order to acknowledge my top 5 stresses, I used the Stress Diagram for this assignment.

I thought, "What makes me stressed out?", and listed several things that make me frustrated. Actually, there was exactly 5 things that make me stressed, and they all are about academic works. The most thing I get stressed is 'Grade.' Because I am planning on transfering to Newhouse, I need to receive a high GPA, which also means I really need to study hard and get a good grade in my classes. The problem is that this is not easy, so I frequently get stressed when I think of getting a high grade. Also, if I get a high grade, I can receive 'scholarship' from the school, which is my second most stressful thing. Syracuse University's tuition is pretty high, so it is really nice to receive scholarship. However, this, too, is not a easy task. 'Homework' and 'Studying' gives me stress too. When I have to do a large amount of homework in a short time or when I have lots of tests/quizzes/exams coming up, I get irritated and frustrated. The last thing is 'School' itself. This contains dormitory, weather, and everything that is related to the school. Comparing to other 4 sources, the 'School' gives me the least stress, but it is true that the school itself gives fair amount of stress.

Now, I comprehended my sources' of stress. But, to tell you the truth, I do not know how this will help me reduce my stress. The objective of this diagram is to figure out what kind of things stresses me out, and do not tell me how I can reduce the stress. I guess the only thing I can do is just do my best, and enjoy the situation. Enjoy it unless you can avoid it.

  1. Enjoy it unless you can't avoid it. I agree with that phrase. And because of that, I've found the way to enjoy doing my school works by using 10 minutes vacation strategy! With this, I cannot not only entertain myself for 10 minutes gap, but also work my butt off on the other times. I felt less stressful studying from this strategy! As I looked at your diagram, I see how scholarship, financial, problem gives you the most stress. It also gives me a lot of stress and I constantly look for the ways to get out of it. I still did not find the way to relieve this stress, but I will look for something and when I find it, I will be sure to tell you as well. Until then, let's not make the stress to overwhelm us Andrew!

  2. Yong Rhee, I disagree with your last paragraph. You can't just enjoy every situation. It is just impossible. Try using strategies like 10 minute vacation or 5 minute escape which allows you to refreshen your mind and have a fresh new brain when you go back to your desk to continue on your work. I'm sure it will be mostly likely helpful towards your most stressed factor: GPA. Anyways, thanks for sharing Yong RHEE~

  3. What Rhee has said in the last paragraph is true. Stress Diagram identifies the sources of stress. It is not a strategy for relieving stress. For a stress relief strategy, you may want to try 10 minute vacation or 5 minute escape plan. I used 10 minute vacation plan and it did reduce and relieve stress to some degree. I didn't try 5 mintue escape plan yet, I hope Chan will explain more about it in the next hour or so.

  4. I also used stress diagram because of it's simplicity and effectiveness on my stress level. It's really easy to make a diagram every time your stress factors change and update them frequently. I love how I can prioritize the stress factors by their influence and that it visualize them in a nice little pie chart for me to identify what needs to be resolved first. In my blog post, I also used stress diagram just like you and also used something called 5 minute zen to go along with my stressful courses. You should check it out it's definitely worth a look.

  5. YEs, I agree a lot with you, I want to live life and enjoy it as much as possible. Even though every one of us have stress, it does not mean that it will always overwhelm you and make you hopeless. If we know how to cope with stress in an effective way, we will not always be under too much pressure, and feel like we have more space and time to ourselves. In a way, being productive is what is important when you do your task. Cramming over nights, then worrying about how there are so much materials to cover is not too wise as it will only effect your mental and physical health. We must live with ease!
