What causes Stress!!??

Ever since I came to college, lot of things have changed my life. One of the thing that was different from high school was the amount of workload that the school has given out to me. As a pre-med student, the amount of workload sometime gets unmanageable and therefore, there are times where I stay up all night, usually about twice a week to get all the work done with quality. This has caused me a lot of stress and recently, I have just begun smoking cigarettes to relieve the stress. I never knew what caused me the stress though. Therefore, I have applied Stress Diagram to figure out what is causing me all these stresses!

When I have finished drawing the diagram, most of my stress resources came from school work. Even though there were outside resources such as relationship with friends and extra curriculums, majority of stress resources came from lack of sleep, amount of work, and GPA. The diagram that I drew refers to two of my classes which has the most amount of work: Biology and Chemistry. The two courses hand out tremendous amount of work and people who currently takes the course would agree upon the fact that the work is confusing and difficult. Since its scientific courses, there are lots of memorization involved along with understanding concepts, equations, formulas, and more....

Even though I have figured out what my stress resources are, I cannot figure out how I will manage the stress. What I can try is having a better time management to increase the amount of sleep, but I cannot do anything about studying the course materials. All I can say is that I can try enjoying the current situation I have or work with friends to reduce the amount of stresses while I am working as cooperation will increase the chance of me understanding the materials better.

However, I have to say that this 10-minute vacation strategy has worked for me a bit. Whenever I got stuck on math problem every once in a while, I refreshened my mind by going onto different entertainment website such as Youtube, Facebook, and addictinggames.com.
I also go out to have a smoke break to get a cool air and exhale all the stress inside my body. Even though I am very aware that it is unhealthy way of relieving stress, it helps for me. All I can say is that do not let stress take control of you, just enjoy what you are doing and be good at it.

  1. I also stay up very late atleast three times a week in order to finish my works. This has happened because of my procrastination. Yet, sometimes the work loads are too overwhelming that even if I try not to procrastinate, I end up staying up late trying to finish all of them. This has awefully given me a lot of stress and I gotta say that when I get stressed out, I just cannot get my work done. 10 minute vacation has helped me a lot as well. I find it very useful to me and I will continue to use it! I agree that we should not let the stress to control us, but we should just enjoy what we are doing! Great job Yong Jin! :)

  2. I frequently pull out an all-nighter. It is not effective, not healthy, and very stressful. Like Adrien, this happen to me because of procrastination as well. 10 minute vacation plan is great for reducing stress in short-term. I also think this prevents procrastination as it provides me a motivation to work for that 10 minute break. Although it is short, it feels good to do something you like for 10 minutes during work.

  3. Stress Diagram is way to go for all the problems and issues related to factors that cause you to get stressed out. I also use stress diagram to identify and make a visualized chart for what's causing me to stress and it worked very well for me. Because it lets you prioritize your stress factors by their stress level, it's much easier than just figuring out what stress you out at the moment. You can easily pick one that's most stressful and resolve that one first instead of going over all the factors and try to solve them all at once.

  4. A lot of stress arise from studying to everything related to school-work. We must figure out the ways to manage these stress, because in the future, I believe we can face even more stress, and it will be hard to keep on if we do not know how to relieve them. I learned the ways I can release my stressl. However, I do not know if 10 minute break will help me at all because I always focus on getting my work done as fast as possible. If I take a 10 minute break during the process of my work, such as writing a paper, it will destroy my concentration level, and eventually make me not want to go back to my work. But if it works for you, great, that is the way to go.

  5. I also get a lot stress from my academic works. But, as a student who are studying, we can't help it but get stressed from our studying. Yes, the Stress Diagram is a fabulous strategy in order to recognize your stresses' sources. I used it, too, and it was really nice to visualize what sources stress me out. Lastly, get some sleep for your health.
