Since I was young, I really did not had a huge motiviation that could influence my studying and grade. I always did my "best" in studying, but there was always something missing that could boost up my grades than the grades I have received. As I come to think of it, I lacked the motiviation of studying. I studied and am studying just because I am in a situation of that I have to study. But, I did not had any reason to study a lot and get a good grade. I had no ambition of getting a good grade or what-so-ever. Now I am in college, I have some goals to acheive. However, just having goals to acheive would not make me study hard and bring up my grade; I needed a motiviation that could stimulate me. In order to find the motiviation(s), I used the Exploring Rewards as my motiviation strategy.
I do not mean the reward as a 'prize money' I will get when I get a good grade. I am saying some benefits that I could get to myselft and some benefits that could bring to my family. Because Syracuse University is a pretty expensive college, I always thought that I need to receive a lot of scholarship that I could get. But, like I said above, having a goal itself does not boost the grade up. I need to "see" the result and get motivated. So, I used the chart at p 282 in the book, and filled out the graph. For the no-cost reward, I said "no scholarship; cannot transfer to Newhouse." Scary to think about that. The one is low-cost reward, and I wrote "little bit of scholarship; have a possibility to transfer; more pocket money for me." Much better situation than the no-cost reward's result. For the high-cost reward, I wrote down "lots of scholarship; high possibility to transfer; benefit to my family and my sister." It is sure the best scenario that I want.
Now I see the rewards that I can receive when I get a high GPA, I am pretty sure I am now motivated to study hard and get a better grade than now. Because I already had some goals that I wanted to acheive, all I need was a motivation to boost my grade. With the motivation in my mind, I am sure I can do better.
Nice Job Agent Yong Rhee. I have used the same method as you, trying to figure out what kinds of rewards are waiting for me ater 8 years of long medical college life. However, with some research, my job offers pretty valuable assets with high salary. In fact, these kinds of awards have impacted my motivation, causing my motivation to boost up higher, making me want to study even harder in college. I hope it had similar, if not, the same effect in your motivation and academia. Overall, solid job Agent
ReplyDeleteJust like you, I was not really motivated by anything to push me on with school works when I was young. But as I got older and entered college, I was motivated by the feeling I get when I receive a good grade after hard work. It really is worth looking at a paper with big letter 'A' on it rather than feeling depressed and upset after getting something lower than 'C'. Also, your goal is same as mine and so I think both of us will be similiar in how we get motivated
ReplyDeleteI have similar result with exploring rewards strategy. It really works well with my courses and really you can apply this to something like your personal goal and other life decision you make. It's really versatile and when it comes to finding out what might happen if you get lazy and stuff it shows the both negative and positive results. So I think it's pretty cool strategy for students in college.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Rhee. I also used the rewards method to figure out the source of my motivation. It is good to list the rewards out beforehand because this way you will know what your rewards are and become motivated for those rewards. The higher your motivations are, the greater your rewards will be
ReplyDeleteMotivation is such a hard thing to hold on to, because there are so many things in the world that distract us from motivation. However, anything can be a source of motivation, and if you only have it, it can lead you to better results and outcomes that will satisfy you and your upcoming future. Only thing to remember is that after a hardship of work, there will be rewarding system following after it. Effort equals to real enjoyment.
