Motivation is one of the key element which can aid you to succeed in college. Motivation let's you actually do things rather than just thinking about it. Motivation plays important role in your academic life as it can help achieve your goal. Motivation is what makes your college life most fulfilling and better in the long run. Unmotivated students might see some success in the early stage but to be successful in the long term, you need to get motivated and should have solid path to follow along. Motivated students are tend to be more optimistic and focuses on learning process. In contrast, unmotivated students are tend to be outcome driven and look for shortcuts. I must admit that I'm in the latter category but luckily I'm motivated to fir in the first category soon.
As we all know, we can't get motivated every single day. There's time when you just want to lay down and do nothing. That's when the motivation strategies comes in to aid you.
I learned two important strategies related to motivation this week:
Academic Fears and Exploring Rewards.
I applied above two strategies to my NSD 225 class. I made a chart with three lists specifying three academic fears in order they are most important. For example, I listed three academic fears I have for the NSD 225 course. In the second column, I described the worst result that can happen due to my fears. In the third column, I described the positive things that may happen. In the last column, I listed solutions that can help me get the positive outcome. This strategy helped me to see what can happen if I don't do enough work for the course and what can happen if I try my best. It's really useful because it let's you see both sides and really make you motivated to get the positive outcome. If I feel like I'm not doing my best for other courses, I will be applying this strategy to make myself get motivated again.
For the second strategy, exploring rewards, I applied it to my NSD 225 course. This strategy is simple enough to apply to all of my other courses. All you need to do is make a simple three column chart and identify rewards in each category that you think that can motivate you. For example, in three column chart, list rewards for No-cost rewards, Low-cost rewards, and High-cost rewards. In each category, I listed some of the rewards that can help me get motivated and get works done to claim those rewards. It works really well because of it's simplicity and efficiency behind it's minimalistic approach.
Academic Fears (NSD 225)
Exploring Rewards (NSD 225)
Overall, this week's lesson on motivation is really important and might be one of the most interesting section of the course. Because, really, motivation is the key to success. If you are motivated, you can do it. You got to this far, so why not try harder to climb higher?
You seized hill, it's time to seize the mountain.
I haven't used the fear strategy, but it really looks effctive Chan. Knowing what your fears are and then turning it around to overcome into positive results looks really impacting on your academia. On the other hand, the reward mehod is the one that I have used. This method has made me to learn what kinds of rewards are upcoming when I graduate from university. Such valuable rewards has made my motivation to boost up, making me wanting to study even harder in college.
ReplyDeleteReally, the motivation strategy helped me get stimulated when I look at the chart I made. I also used the Exploring Rewards strategy for my motivation strategy, and I think it really helps. Whenever I lay down doing nothing, I would then look at my chart and say, "I shouldn't be like this." and get back to work. Of course, I give myself some breaks when I need it. Anyways, I think the Exploring Rewards strategy is a good one to stimulate yourself. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI definately fear mostly of failing exams. Recently, I received a midterm exam grade from History class and despite my wish, I did not get a grade that I wanted and expected. So I was a bit disappointed at myself. What was important about that was, however, that it also motivated me to work harder to avoid the same result. Just because I wanted to avoid getting disappointed at my work, I simply became motivated to work hard. Motivating yourself in whichever possible way!
ReplyDeleteI also have fear of failing exams, especially for classes that have high percentage for exam grades. For example, my CFS388 only have 2 exams, each of them being 40% of the total grade. If I were to imagine getting a flunking grade for either one of the exam, it would be devastating. As for reward, it is more a positive way to gather motivation. Good job.
ReplyDeleteYou have written on your rewards page that you getting good grades is the key to your motivation in working hard. It is the key to success because it is eventually what we all work for. What I like about the rewarding motivation is that after a hard amount of work, you recieve a grade that you want. Then, this will motivate me to work harder for the next exam, since I know that I can do it.
