I did not really had any choice on deciding which class that I should use the reading strategies, because out of my 5 classes, there is only one class that I really use the textbook beneficially: my Astronomy class. Most of my other classes depends on the lectures and the notes during the class. Also, my astronomy textbook has a lot of information that can help me studying for the exam that is coming up soon. Anyhow, I chose my Astronomy class for the two reading strategies that I had in mind.
The two strategies that I chose are the 'X Minute Reading' and the 'TART' strategy. Instead of using the strategies the way they are explained in the book, I sort of change the strategies and combined those two strategies.
Before the lecture began, I first read the material in the textbook to get familiar with it. I just skimmed throught the textbook that I was going to learn during the lecture, so I can get familiar with the material. I paid more attention at the end of the chapter, where the textbook summaries and describes the key concepts and the terms of the materials (This part goes to the TART strategy). After I read the terms and got familiar with the concepts, I attend my lecture, and took notes that the professor showed during the class. It was a bit easier for me to understand the materials because I read it before class. After the lecture, I opened my textbook to read it again, but this time I timed myself in reading the text (both TART strategy and X Minute Reading strategy). The textbook's material was divided into several sections, so I gave myself about 5 to 10 minutes for each sections. After I read all of the materials in the textbook, it was time for me to summarize the materials and cr
eate a study aid (The second picture is part of my study aid). When I usually make a study aid, I have my own style of making a study aid, and I prefered using my own study aid style, because I have been using it for a long time. After I made the study aid, I reviewed the study aid over and over again until I thought it will be enough. The last step of the this two-combined strategy was creating the test questions. Using the note from the lecture and the textbook, I made several questions in multiple choices and labeled the answers on the bottom of the last page of the question sheet.
Though I did not follow exactly as the book told me to do, I think the strategy helped me a lot. I thought that both of strategy will work out good when they were combined to each other, and it actually worked out really good. It helped me understand the materials. I also think that I was able to save some time because I combined the two strategies. It was like catching two birds with one stone: use two strategies effectively at once, and save time!
I really thought TART to be very helpful! I thought it included a lot of different strategies in one simple TART. So I thought it to be very good for my courses that was more lecture dependant. I see how you mixed the two strategies: TART and X Minus Reading and used that together to fit your style of learning. I see how you created your own way to read effectively and I think that is a very good idea for I do the same thing! Good job!

ReplyDeleteI have used the TART strategy for two courses and I have to say it really worked well! It allowed me to learn the materials before the lecture actually began and forced me to squeeze my brain to come up with possible exam questions which if I accumulate enough, it will be very helpful for upcoming exams. However, X miunute seems to fit your learning style, and I encourage you to use both strategies if it works well for you! good Job YONG RHEE~
ReplyDeleteIt seems everyone loves TART strategy. I think it's because this strategy is simple yet very efficient. I also like his strategy because it's familiar to my current reading habit but more efficient and add more functionality. As I stated before, TART strategy is great for reading and preparing for an exam. I will be using this strategy a lot more and maybe if I get used to it later, it might just replace my reading habit. X Minute strategy looks very simple as well so I will be giving that strategy a shot and make it work together with TART.
ReplyDeleteHello Rhee, it seems that most of us were comfortable with using the tart strategy. I liked the strategy though it was time consuming. Tart strategy requires consistency. The more you apply to it, you will get better result, but if you don't keep up a steady pace with it, I think you are better off to just cram the material instead of wasting time. Anyways I think it worked great for you so good job!
ReplyDeleteTART strategy is very efficient I can tell, a lot of people has been using it lately. However, I have never dared to use the X Minute STrategy. You have utilized TART just like the way I have used it. It lets me view the materials as a whole before the lectures, then it lets me review them all three times throughout the process. I guess that skimming the material before the lecture is a big help, since you will be able to understand what your professor is talking about in a better manner. This is a very nice usage.
