Out of all of my classes, I chose to use the note-taking method in my Astronomy class; this class has the most notes, has a lot of terms to organize, and seems to be the best course to adapt the method.
The second picture is the part of the note that I rewrote. The green part is the title, and the other part is the information of the materials. The last picture is the 1 plus 3 note that I have made based on the note.
The 1 plus 3 note is useful because it has the term with summary/definition and the anticipating questions for the exam. I did not need to make two different strategy; instead, I could do both of the strategy at once.
However, I found that this strategy consumed a lot of time. I basically rewrote the note 2 times, wrote note 3 times in total. It is true that rewriting the notes helps me memorizing the materials, but I do not really see the importance of rewriting the note 3 times. Also, because the materials that I used was very limited, the questions that I made was also very limited. Though it is hard to decide to if the strategy was effective to me by only using it once, this strategy was not really useful to me.
I had similar conflict as you Rhee. Deciding to take notes via laptop or hand can be hard sometimes. Most of us were used to taking notes by hand probably until college. I chose to use laptop in college because 1. we're allowed to use laptop 2. it is much fast 3. you can always edit it without making a mess. Now those are the good parts of using a laptop. I hope you will try sometime and feel the difference. And as for the 1+3 note, I am glad to know that it worked for you greatly
ReplyDeleteI am just like you, I always use pen/paper to write my notes. Maybe it is because my laptop is too heavy to bring around and is very old-fashion model, which is not too confortable to write notes with. Back to the point, I also used 1 Plus 3 notes which helped me alot in my learning process. I had the concept/definition part, along with graphic organizer and questions on my own. You broke down your notes into pieces which looks very organized. I like to keep my notes organized and easy to view as well, but my HTW 221 course has way too much information to do that. So instead of writing down all the definitions, I made a graphic organizer to view the topics easily. The 1 PLUS 3 strategy helps in ways that you can utilized your notes to making and aswering questions that you make. It also helps to learn when the information is viewed clearly. Nice note taking right there.
ReplyDeleteI have used the same strategy as you Andrew. I have applied this concept of strategy in CHE116 and the outcome was surprising. The method really helped make my studying much easier and more efficient. Thus, I was able to pull it all together and visually able to see the relationship of major concepts with only my notes! Nice

ReplyDeleteI see that you used the same strategy on the same course, Astronomy. Unlike you, I found this strategy to be pretty useful. I put down the terminologies on the left hand side, with details and examples on the right side. And, I did also put down my own questions on the bottom part, which I fill very organized. I think this helps very well for when I need to go back and find the terminologies, I can just go to one section and look at the terms I want for they will all be right there in one page. Overall I found this 1 + 3 note very effective and I hope you to find a better strategy for you!
ReplyDeleteI think 1 plus 3 notes strategy works for some people and doesn't work as effective for some people. But I think it will work for most of people because of flexibility and the ability to adapt it to way you like. I hope you give this strategy one more try for other course.
